Our travels, exploits, and adventures

Great Smoky Mtn Nat’l Park, NC to Franklin, TN

July 20, 2011

This morning, we woke up to lots of much needed rain, packed up camp, and headed about 12 miles up the park road to the Appalachian trail at Newfound  Gap.

The mountains looked erie as we started our 8 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail in the morning rain

Dondi, happy to be hiking on the "AT" and more happy that the rain let up

2 hours and 4 miles later, we arrived at 'Charlie's Bunion'- a rock outcropping with spectacular 360 degree views

"Dondi, you want me to climb up where? I think you were a monkey in your former life. . ." -Erin

The climb was for a picture at the top (the real top, not the regular trail top)

We hiked out, had a picnic lunch, and headed straight for Franklin, TN- with just one little tiny diversion to the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World where you could spend a whole day in the 150,000 square foot store if you wanted to

We were pretty exhausted by the time we made it to Franklin, TN but also excited to put some miles behind us in the right direction (West- as opposed to South and East)
