Asheville, NC to Great Smoky Mountain Nat’l Park, NC
July 19, 2011
This morning we did a lot of catching up on pressing matters- like work, e-mail, voicemail, and of course- our blog. =) After we felt like we were able to get on the road, we headed out to lunch then got on the road. We drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Cherokee, TN in the mountains then continued onto Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
The mountains in western North Carolina and view from the Blue Ridge Parkway
And we're off on our first adventure of the day- a pretty strenuous hike up to Devil's Courthouse in Shenandoah National Park, NC
The view after a half mile hike straight up from the top of Devil's Courthouse
We spent about 20 minutes in Cherokee- a small and very touristy village on the Cherokee Indian Reservation
As soon as we entered Great Smoky Mountain National Park, we had the great fortune to see about 8 elk up close
When we got to a campsite at Smokemont in the park, we set up the tent and enjoyed a delicious meal of gluten free pasta with pesto, carrots and hummus, and grilled corn on the cob- YUM
We had a great day. . . until the pouring rain came when we were sleeping in our tent. Fortunately we stayed pretty dry until it was time to pack up at 7am-ish and it was still pouring. . .
